Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE)
Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) is an innovative and efficient sample preparation technique primarily used for the extraction and concentration of organic compounds from liquid samples. This method was developed as an enhancement over other techniques like Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME), offering significantly higher extraction capacities due to its larger sorptive phase volume.
A stir bar coated with a sorptive material, typically polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), is placed in a liquid sample and stirred. As the bar stirs the sample, analytes in the sample are absorbed into the coating. After extraction, the stir bar is removed from the sample and the analytes are desorbed, typically using thermal desorption with GC analysis.
