GERSTEL Thermal Desorption Unit (TDU 2)
The thermal desorption unit TDU 2 is a thermal desorption system with a wide range of applications . It can be used for classic thermal desorption as well as for direct thermal extraction or direct headspace or SPME injection into the KAS cold application system . The TDU 2 impresses with its full temperature control and compact design without cold or active spots in the sample path. The TDU 2 can be combined with other GERSTEL modules and thus forms the basis for a variety of applications. Using the MultiPurposeSampler MPS, the operation of the TDU 2 can be automated. The system is controlled using the MAESTRO software .
How the TDU works 2
The TDU 2 offers various application options. In classic thermal desorption, analytes that have previously been enriched on an adsorbent are thermally desorbed in the TDU 2. In direct thermal extraction, analytes are thermally extracted from solid or liquid samples in the TDU 2. In both cases the analytes are in thermal desorption tubes. With direct headspace or SPME injection, analytes are injected through the hot TDU 2 into the cold KAS and collected there. Both thermal desorption and thermal extraction are temperature-programmed. The temperatures and gas flows in the system can be individually adjusted.
Advantages
Full temperature control allows analytes to be heated gently and prevents undesirable reactions with atmospheric oxygen. The analytes are specifically separated from the sample matrix. The compact design with the liner-in-liner principle prevents the carryover and loss of analytes and reduces maintenance effort. The system can be further expanded at any time. Thermal extraction allows you to analyze substances that cannot be injected directly into the GC/MS system using the syringe. With the MAESTRO software you can control the entire system easily and intuitively.
Options
The PYRO option enables automated pyrolysis of solid and liquid samples during thermal desorption in the TDU 2.

Features
- Intelligently designed and based on a “Liner-in-Liner” concept it has no valves or transfer lines.
- Active sites are eliminated, reducing the risk of analyte loss, discrimination and memory effects to an absolute minimum.
- When configured with the GERSTEL MultiPurpose Sampler (MPS), up to 40 samples are stored per TDU tray in individually sealed sample positions.
- Samples can be analysed in one automated sequence using one or more methods.
