GERSTEL Twister Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE)

The GERSTEL Twister revolutionises the extraction of organic compounds from aqueous matrices with its Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) technique. This solvent-free method is not only faster than traditional extraction techniques but also offers up to 1000 times more sensitivity than SPME, thanks to its larger sorbent volume and efficient stirring that allows it to extract and concentrate analytes from a substantially larger sample volume.

Although it resembles a conventional magnetic stirring rod, the Twister actively absorbs and concentrates organic compounds while stirring samples such as water, body fluids, or beverages. With the capability to process many samples simultaneously on multi-position stir plates, it significantly enhances productivity and throughput while eliminating laborious and resource-heavy sample preparation steps. Analytes are typically desorbed using thermal desorption, though liquid desorption is an option for very high-boiling, thermally labile compounds or when analysis by HPLC is necessary.

Features

  • With up to 1000 times more sensitivity than SPME, Twisters provide lower detection limits
  • Available in various sizes and coatings, including polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and ethylene glycol (EG)-copolymer
  • Standard PDMS Twisters: ideal for unspecific sorption of apolar compounds, enhancing the detection of environmental contaminants and pollutants
  • EG-Silicone Twisters: specially designed for specific binding of polar compounds, perfect for the analysis of phenols and other hydrogen bond donors in complex matrices
  • Multi-Stir Bar Solutions (Twicester): increase extraction efficiency by using multiple Twisters simultaneously for a broader range of analyte recovery
  • Automated desorption and analysis via MultiPurposeSampler (MPS) enhances productivity and throughput
  • Designed for multiple uses, reducing waste and costs associated with single-use consumables
  • Typical application areas include food and beverages, flavor and fragrance, environmental analysis of water (EU-WFD) or waste water, and extractables and leachables from pharmaceutical packaging
