Tosoh Bioscience LenS3 MALS-V

The LenS 3 MALS-V Detector from Tosoh Bioscience combines multi-angle light scattering (MALS) and integrated viscometer in a single, compact system for advanced polymer characterisation. Developed from the proven design of the first-generation LenS3 MALS detector, the MALS-V variant combines a precision viscometer to enable simultaneous determination of molecular weight (MW), radius of gyration (Rg) and intrinsic viscosity (IV) within a single GPC/SEC analysis. When paired with a concentration detector, such as refractive index (RI) or UV, the LenS3 MALS-V provides a comprehensive triple-detection solution for detailed molecular and structural evaluation.

The intrinsic viscosity of a polymer reflects the compactness and flexibility of its molecular chains in dilute solution. In combination with light scattering data, IV measurements yield insight into the molecular conformation (random coil, sphere, or rod), backbone density, degree of branching, hydrodynamic radius (Rh), and Mark–Houwink parameters. This integrated approach provides a deeper understanding of polymer architecture and behaviour in solution.

The viscometer also supports universal calibration, allowing molecular weight determination independent of optical properties. This capability is particularly useful for polymers with weak scattering intensity, light absorption, or fluorescence, or when comparison with historical calibration methods is required.
The system is fully controlled through SECview software, which manages both light scattering and viscometry data within a unified platform. Seamless data acquisition, synchronised signal processing, and automated calculations ensure robust and reproducible results while simplifying workflow in complex GPC/SEC analyses.
